Philosophy Walk – Missoula

August 4, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm MDT

Free

Please join us for our evening philosophy walk on Sunday, August 4th from 5:30pm-8:30pm.  Topic:  Reconnecting with Nature.  Special guest speakers/philosophers-on-trail — Ryan Aikin (Volunteer & Strategist, Merlin CCC, Grants Manager, Youth Homes & Humanitarian) & Henry Kramer (2019 Merlin Student Fellow & Philosopher, University of Montana Missoula).

This walk will be a casual, free-flowing conversation about our relationship with nature.  We will explore a variety of questions including:

— Why reconnect with nature?  Is this a good thing?  What does it do for us?  What does it do for nature?

— What insights can we draw from phenomenology (the study of consciousness and how we experience phenomena) and pragmatism to help us answer these questions?

— How do animism and language factor into the ways in which we see and experience the world?

—- Does technology (and the world of mass-produced things) disconnect us from nature?  If so, how?

— What are some of the ethical implications of reconnecting (or not) with nature?

Meeting/Hike Location:  Nine Mile Community Center (25620 Nine Mile Rd., approx. nine miles off interstate 90, Exit 82).

You do not need a background in philosophy to enjoy & participate in these walks. An open mind & desire to engage in thoughtful dialogue (whether from a listening or contribution standpoint) is all that’s needed!
