Weatherman Phil (Bill Murray) is out to cover the annual emergence of a town’s beloved groundhog (Punxstawney Phil) from its hole. He gets caught in a blizzard that he didn’t predict and finds himself trapped in a time warp, leaving him doomed to relive the same day over and over again…until he gets it right. Directed by Harold Ramis, this 1993 film is both a comedic and philosophical jaunt into what it might mean to live a good life.

What We’ll Be Doing
After grabbing a seat in our mini-theater and welcoming hello…we’ll settle in & watch The Groundhog Day. This classic comedy will have you reeling…even if you’ve seen it before! (Pun intended!). After the film, we’ll have a free-flowing community conversation led by Student Scholar Fellow Gavin Payne based on some of the philosophical questions the film raises…from ego and choice, to meaning, purpose, and the good life.

About Our Facilitator
Gavin Payne is a senior at Helena High School, a regular participant at Merlin activities, and our first ever high school student scholar fellow. The founder of the Helena High School Moral Science Club, he will headed to the University of Montana in the Fall to study philosophy and classics. In his free time Gavin loves to read, analyze poetry, and write.
