October 2021 Philosophy Walk: “Justice as Fairness”

In this philosophy walk led by Ed Glowienka we explored justice as through the lens of fairness, freedom/responsibility, and equity — aspects of justice advanced by the late philosopher John Rawls. While a summary of Rawls’ views were provided at the outset, as well as some of his working principles along the way, the bulk of our meandering was spent exploring, working out, expanding upon, and applying Rawls’ views in a “hands-on” way to the contemporary issues of environmental justice and international justice. Philosophy Workshop: “Justice as Fairness – An Introduction to Rawls”

In this outdoor workshop we explored the idea of justice through the lens of equity and fairness as advanced by philosopher John Rawls. The workshop was introductory in nature explored the dynamics of Rawls’ arguments and their implications, as well as the intellectual climate within which his philosophical contributions arose. In this walk we’ll be exploring the the idea of justice through the lens of equity and fairness — two critical features of the late John Rawls’ theory of justice. While a summary of Rawls’ views, including the dynamics of his arguments and its implications will be discussed at the outset, the bulk of this walk will be spent exploring, working out, expanding upon, and applying Rawls’ views in a “hands-on” way to past and contemporary issues. Measure of the Hunt: Elk Deserve Better

Elk are elk and their worth does not rely on us, though it is influenced by our ability to identify and communicate that value. If we truly love and appreciate elk, it’s time for hunters to reclaim the ethical highroad of fair chase hunting that honors elk for what they are and demands the hunter to be the very best he or she can be. In this article, 2019 Merlin Community Scholar Fellow Thomas Baumeister, discusses two different “measures” of hunting, how fairness and respect are part and parcel of reverence, and why reinstating the ethical pursuit of the hunted as a measure is important.
