August 2017 Philosophy Think & Drink

After a brief hiatus in June — for our 2nd Annual Brew-Wine-Chu Fundraiser & in July (for a much-needed escape into nature) — our  monthly Think & Drink was back on the scene.  And what a delightful gathering it was!  Our group convened in our normal spot (i.e., the wine cave room at The Sapphire) and discussed all sorts of “fun thinky” things.  Starting from the initial question of choice raised by Jemma Hazen about rationality — to paraphrase: If we are actually non-rational beings, but think we are rational, what implications for democracy might this have?” — our group explored:

  • What is rationality?
  • What is the relationship between reason and emotions?
  • What is intuition and what role does it play?
  • The Democratic institution
  • Fact, fiction and perception
  • How we make decisions and judge whether or not those decisions are ‘reasonable’
  • And more…

Thank you to Jemma Z Hazen,Ross Peter Nelson, Thomas Baumeister, Marie Bourgeois (and her lovely friend from Boulder, CO who took time out from a roofing job in Havre, MT to join the fun!), Brian LaMoure, Brian Coplin and Russ Danaher for the wonderful & thought-provoking conversation. Looking forward to our next cave gathering!

Thank you to P.L.A.T.O. (Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization) for helping to support our philosophy in the community programs like these!
