One event on April 13, 2022 at 7:00 pm

A collaborative project between the Carroll College Philosophy Department and Merlin CCC about the limits (?) of speech.

The first symposium in the series will focus on the ethics and legality of politically correct speech (especially on college campuses)…and the relationship of this speech to freedom of expression.  The second symposium will focus on freedom of speech in the context of humor/comedy. Both events are free to the public.

Symposia

Part of the Philosophy Now lecture series at Carroll College, this presentation by J. Angelo Corlett, PhD, Professor of Philosophy & Ethics at San Diego State University, will focus on the ethics and legality of politically correct speech, especially on college campuses, and the relationship of this speech to freedom of expression.

He’ll explore questions like: Can freedom of expression can go too far?  Are there legal and moral limits to what we ought to say…or how or when we ought to say it?

This event will be held in the Carroll College Student Center.  FREE & open to the public.

In this symposium, we’ll have a free-wheeling discussion about contemporary humor with Dr. J. Angelo Corlett, looking at some of comedy’s most beloved (and oft controversial) greats, focusing primarily on the work of Dave Chapelle

After watching some video clips, we’ll explore and discuss such questions as: What are the aims of humor? What’s the difference between an offense and a harm? Is there a difference between using a word and mentioning a word and does it matter? Do comedians have certain obligations?  What about listeners? And more…

Program directed by Marisa Diaz-Waian & Dr. Barry Ferst.  This event will be held in a TBD venue.  FREE & open to the public (18+ years old/mature audiences).
